John Lennon's drawings and manuscripts are coming to auction in New York City this summer. According to Sotheby's, the 89-lot collection titled "You Might Well Arsk" is scheduled for sale June 4. The items are being put up for sale by Lennon's publisher, Tom Maschler, who worked with Lennon on In His Own Write and A Spaniard in the Works during the 1960s.
Among the items being auctioned are a handwritten manuscript from 1965 called "The Singularge Experience of Miss Anne Duffield," which is expected to sell for $40,000 to $60,0000, and a 1964 drawing titled "Neville Club," which includes the caption "Puffing and globbering they drugged theyselves rampling or dancing with wild abdomen, stubbing in wild postumes amongst themselves..." and is estimated to fetch between $18,000 and $22,000. A number of other satirical drawings, doodles and gibberish poems will be on sale as well.
In an interview with the New York Times, Maschler spoke of working with Lennon. "My relationship with John Lennon was different to those I had with all the other authors I worked with over my years as a publisher. Having seen a superb sketch of his that a mutual acquaintance showed me, I met with John to suggest that he should produce John Lennon 'In His Own Write.' I then had to inspire in him the confidence to write and produce the drawings."
Highlights from the upcoming sale were recently exhibited in Austin and London and will be on display in New York starting May 28. You can see a few of them on Sotheby's website now.
