Veteran actor Tom Hanks showed the world his family comes first during an interview with Entertainment Tonight on Sunday (Oct. 4), revealing he's proud of his son, Chet Hanks', decision to seek help for his personal demons by entering himself into rehab for drug addiction treatment.
Last week, Chet released a series of personal and emotional videos to his Instagram about the battle he's been facing with cocaine addiction. The 25-year-old also cleared up rumors about him disappearing over the summer, revealing he's been in a drug rehabilitation center to help him get clean.
The Captain Phillips star is more than proud of his son's bravery to take on his addiction, because sometimes asking for help is the hardest party of journey towards recovery. Tom spoke candidly about his son's intimate Instagram videos and his determination to live a healthy drug-free lifestyle.
"As a parent, you love your kids unconditionally," Tom said to ET during the Bridge of Spies premiere on Sunday (Oct. 4). "You support them every step of the way. You've got to applaud the bravery and honesty when it actually comes out of your own house."
Chet, an aspiring rapper who once went by the name Chet Haze, revealed he has been doing exceptionally well since taking the plunge of seeking outside help in a drug rehabilitation center. He's been working on getting himself back into a healthier and more productive space.
He admitted the rockstar lifestyle he was so accustomed to wasn't working for him anymore. Taking a deep look at himself and the choices he's made in the past, helped him realize just how much the drugs were ruining his life.
"A couple months ago I was selling coke [and] doing coke until I couldn't even snort it up my nose anymore because it was so clogged," Chet said in his Instagram post. "I even smoked crack. If I can change, you can change. There is a solution."
The pressure of following in his father's footsteps and getting stuck in his shadows played a major toll on him. Tom is the father of four children, most of which have dabbled in the world of acting. His eldest son, Colin, has had a notable stint career in Hollywood, working on projects like Roswell, Dexter, Fargo, and many more.
During his intimate recollection of his rocky past, Chet assured his followers he was not glorifying the use of narcotics or alcohol in any way, shape or form. Chet realized he was leading himself down a dangerous road that would ultimately steer him towards two paths: jail or death.
"It's been a long journey discovering who I am. Because all the pressures that I've dealt with in my life -- you know, being the son of my dad and everything. Just trying to find where I fit in."
Chet remained optimistic about his future throughout the videos. He encouraged anyone battling an addiction to seek help, whether it's a meeting or rehab. Without the care he's been receiving from rehab, his belief in a higher power, and the love and support from his family and friends, Chet doesn't believe he would've been able to stay strong during his journey.
