Sunday night during James Bay's gig at the Cambridge Corn Exchange in Cambridge, England, the audience saw a surprise guest grace the stage for an unexpected duet. He was joined by everyone's favorite ginger-haired singer-songwriter, Ed Sheeran, for a duet of Bay's "Let It Go."
Instead of offering an elaborate explanation as to why Sheeran stopped by the Cambridge gig, Bay talked over the audience's cheers simply saying, "Ladies and gentlemen, Ed Sheeran," as the singer strummed his guitar and tackled lead vocals on the chorus and second verse.
"Ed doesn't have to turn up and guest on mates' records or gigs," said Bay in a statement via Billboard. "But he's a real musician who just really loves to play. What's awesome for the rest of us is that he's so generous with that." According to Bay's rep, the two musicians initially met at the Brit Awards earlier this year where Bay took home the Critics' Choice Award and Sheeran snagged the British Album and British Male Solo Artist awards.
The "Thinking Out Loud" singer recently revealed that he'll be taking a break from his music career to focus on volunteering and other aspects of his life that don't get nearly enough attention. As of late, Sheeran has dabbled in a few different areas including acting on Kurt Sutter's latest TV drama The Bastard Executioner, unveiling his very own label called Gingerbread Man Records and offering his vocals to a number of shows including the Global Citizen Festival in New York City.
"My plan is to get rid of my iPhone, get rid of Internet, get a Nokia 3310 and just go off into the wilderness somewhere for a bit," he told MTV News. "Even if it's just a month without contact with other people." Losing the phone would be a huge weight off for Sheeran, who is regularly glued to his screen sending texts and answering e-mails.
