Nicolas Jaar has released a new track, "Fight (Nymphs IV)," on Belgian label R&S Records. The track is the latest in this year's Nymphs series. Both Nymphs II and Nymphs III had been released on Jaar's own label, Other People.
Both Nymphs II and Nymphs III were released as 12" singles with two tracks apiece. Thus, Jaar is likely planning the B-side of the upcoming Nymphs IV release. In June, Jaar put out Pomegranates, intended to be a new score to the 1969 Soviet film The Color of Pomegranates, as a free album. He also scored Dheepan, a French film that was released in May and won the Palm D'Or at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival.
"Fight" is a step away from Jaar's recent film music as well as the avant-garde compositions of Nymphs II & III. It's more of the slow-burning, organic dance music that became his signature upon the release of his debut album, Space Is Only Noise, in 2011. The 8:36 song features a thick and ringing bassline and a vocal sample, likely Jaar's own voice, pitched at many different levels. Listen to "Fight" below.
"Fight" is Jaar's first release on R&S Records. The independent label, which turned 30 last year, has long been among the most respected and consistent in electronic music, with releases by Aphex Twin, Juan Atkins, James Blake and many more. It has recently expanded its boundaries by releasing records from Sporting Life, the producer for NYC hip-hop group RATKING, and Blue Daisy, an experimental rap artist with ties to the U.K.-bred trip-hop movement. The latest from Jaar is another exciting addition to the R&S catalog. What do you think of this latest release? Let us know in the comments.
