An all-star cast of musicians came together for the annual All for the Hall concert, this year at the new Playstation Theater in Times Square Tuesday night, for a private acoustic performance to raise money for Nashville's Country Music Hall of Fame and music education programs. Performers included Paul Simon, Emmylou Harris, Carrie Underwood, Brad Paisley and Vince Gill.
Rolling Stone Country described the event as "joyously unscripted" as the musicians causally played through hits old and new. Simon played "The Boxer" right alongside Underwood's newest release "Smoke Break."
The event is held annually in Nashville and biannually in New York and Los Angeles, rotating between the two coasts. The proceeds from the raffle, which fetched $95,000 for a private performance from Gill and Harris, and the cost of entrance to the private dinner, all go to the museum in Nashville and their efforts to continue music education in the area, according to CMT.
Even if it was just thrown together that night, the song choices kept things lively, going back and forth between some of Paisley's party songs and the soft contemplative lyrics of Simon.
Harris performed "My Songbird" in memory of her late friend Jesse Winchester, followed closely by another song in memorial to a fallen friend as Brad Paisley dedicated "Country Boy" to Little Jimmy Dickens.
Other highlights included a little bit of playful scolding from Simon to Paisley for asking about what Greenwich Village was like back in his day. Gill also said he was only invited under the pretext that he had to follow Simon, which set the playful yet reverential tone of the night.
Some fans caught a number of the night's performances on their phones and the quality is notably better than your average concert since the songs are sparse guitar and vocal arrangements of the tunes. Check out some of the performances below.
