For those who didn't get a chance to make the trip to Chicago's Soldier Field or the Bay Area's Levi Stadium, the Grateful Dead will now bring all of the music from their wildly accomplished 50th anniversary Fare Thee Well tour gigs to living room television sets worldwide this fall. It's just been announced that Fare Thee Well: Celebrating 50 Years of Grateful Dead box sets will hit stores on Nov. 20, available across an array of formats including digital downloads.
The double disc "best of" collection compiles the highlights of each Dead gig into a comprehensive box set, assembling "every single note heard" during the band's three-night stint over Fourth of July weekend in Chicago. The retail variety of Fare Thee Well is currently available for preorder but only boasts full video and audio from the July 5 concert.
A limited and numbered box set is being sold on the band's official site, Dead.net, including a 12-CD/7-Blu-ray or 12-CD/7-DVD collection, both limited to just 20,000 copies, UltimateClassicRock notes. The exclusive set also contains behind-the-scenes extras like backstage footage and further insight into the "parking lot scene" as well at the astronomical demand for tickets. The Fare Thee Well release trails just after the Dead's 80-disc box that collected live performances spanning the group's 50-year career, making it the second live release from the Dead in 2015.
Three quarters of the band's surviving "core four," Bob Weir, Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann (sans Phil Lesh), have reassembled with singer-songwriter John Mayer, Ratdog keyboardist Jeff Chimenti and the Allman Brothers Band's Oteil Burbridge as Dead & Company, ready to hit the touring circuit starting Oct. 29 at Albany's Times Union Center.
"[John Mayer] was answering back, and it was fun, and more fun than I was really going to be happy about just walking away from," Weir explained to Rolling Stone of his decision to keep truckin' on with Mayer.
