It is that time of the year again. DJ Mag releases its annual list of the fan voted DJ Mag Top 100 list and everyone, not understanding that it is a popularity and marketing budget contest, gets mad that their guy didn't nab the top spot. This year Belgian DJs Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike jumped three spots from four to one to the claim the title as the No. 1 DJ in the world. The "Hum" duo ousting two-time defending champion Hardwell, who slides in at number two. Martin Garrix, thought by many to be the favorite for the number one spot, is voted number three ahead of Armin van Buuren and Tiësto at four and five respectively.
Over the next few hours and days Twitter fingers will be on full blast lamenting the final draw, but in the end effects very few people. The poll has started to lose relevancy in the past few years as promoters and fans grow more intelligent about artists and have more mediums to discover music. The top spot will help Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike with booking and it will look good in their biography, but beyond that, their music probably won't change and they won't start playing different festivals.
The pair invested a lot of money in their DJ Mag campaign, enlisting celebrities like members of the Belgian National Soccer team and Jean Claude van Damme to support them. They employed street teams with iPads to support them and it appears to have worked.
