Nowadays, artists seem to be competing for the most creative album release, but it looks like John Frusciante has won this game. The former Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist is streaming his 11th ENCLOSURE, early...from space.
According to a press release, the album was loaded onto an "experimental Cube Satellite called Sat-JF14" and launched into orbit aboard an "Interorbital Systems' NEPTUNE Modular Rocket." Fans can now download the Sat-JF14 app and track the satellite in real time.
However, the album won't become unlocked until the satellite reaches a user's specific geographic region. ENCLOSURE then becomes available for streaming on any iOS or Android mobile device. Another feature on the app allows fans to chat with one another and share thoughts on the effort.
"This partnership with John Frusciante, Record Collection and Loducca represents a new chapter in our quest to further explore the cosmic relationship between science and art," says Interorbital Systems CEO Randa Milliron. "ENCLOSURE is a musical masterpiece and we're thrilled to be able to utilize our proprietary space technology to facilitate this unprecedented form of space-enhanced distribution."
The album will be available for preview until April 7, at which time "Sat-JF14 will cease transmission."
ENCLOSURE is due out April 8 via Record Collection. Watch a mini documentary on the Sat-JF14 project and check out the album's lead single "Scratch" below, sans satellite. Let us know what you think in the comments section.
