Seems like just about everyone is getting hit with lawsuits these days, and Usher and Justin Bieber are no exception. Luckily, the suit against the two crooners has been dropped.
The suit, dating back to last year, was filed by Virginia songwriters Devin Copeland and Maerio Overton. Copeland and Overton claim that Usher and Justin Bieber copied parts of a song that they wrote in Bieber's 2010 hit "Somebody to Love."
The song was featured on the album My World 2.0.
The lawsuit claimed that Usher and Bieber's song contains numerous lyrical and stylistic similarities to their copyrighted song.
Reports say the two claim Usher stole the song after they shared it with a music producer who gave it to him.
The case was dismissed on Friday (March 28).
A U.S. District Judge ruled that the two songs are not intrinsically similar.
"A reasonable juror could not conclude that a member of the public would construe the aesthetic appeal of the songs as being similar," the judge wrote in her ruling according to The Virginian-Pilot.
Vibe magazine reports that the suit was worth $10 million.
Heather Bright and The Stereotypes were given writing credit for the Usher/Bieber versions of the song.
"Although the immediate purchasers may be industry professionals, their purchasing decisions are based on the song's expected appeal to consumers, and any harm caused to plaintiffs by the accuse songs would be caused by the public construing Plaintiffs' song as similar to the accused songs," the judge further explained in her ruling.
