Pharrell Williams and The National team up for follow up to 'Happy' called 'I've Been Happier' [LISTEN]

Pharrell, in all his "Happy" glory, has released a new single with The National called "I've Been Happier." During their much-anticipated performance, no big hats were seen on Pharrell, and the guys of the band could be seen with some semblance of a smile on their faces.

The song incorporates the unavoidable catchiness of a Pharrell song, with the melancholic feeling one gets while listening to The National. When asked what brought on this sudden change in emotion, Pharrell said that with his 41st birthday coming up (April 5), he is just "tired of being happy all the time and dancing with little yellow minions." Although he got to dance with A-list stars such as Meryl Streep and Lupita Nyong'o, at the Oscars, he cannot wait for people to "stop clapping when they are happy."

Upon hearing this, The National decided to reach out to this not-so-happy artist for an epic, albeit unexpected, collaboration. When asked how such different style performers got along in the studio, frontman Matt Berninger said: "The band and Pharrell got along great. I think we both lacked what the other had, so by combining our two sounds we have created an amazing song."

Although it's almost impossible to imagine, this song really is the perfect mixture of both performers' distinct sounds.
