Fans are eagerly awaiting the premiere Game of Thrones' fourth season, but plans for season five of the HBO series are already underway with news of an unexpected collaboration. Kanye West and Jay Z, the duo behind Watch the Throne, have announced their debut in Westeros.
"We've been trying to reach new audiences," said Lucinda Martinez, HBO's senior vice president for multicultural marketing. "The Catch the Throne mixtape was the beginning of that initiative, and we think Kanye and Jay Z have that star power needed for this marketing project."
But don't expect fully formed characters for the two rappers. Their appearance on the show is merely a cameo. According to Martinez, filming hasn't yet begun on the episode, and their exact role isn't clear.
Earlier today, West posted a cryptic message on Twitter, "Watch the Game of Thrones #expecttheunexpected."
At first glance, it appears the rapper is encouraging people to watch the HBO series, but now that news of the collaboration has been revealed, it is possible that he mashed up Game of Thrones with Watch the Throne to see if fans could figure it out.
Neither West nor Jay Z could be reached for a comment. However, a Martinez said that the two are big fans of the show and were excited about their cameo when casting director Robert Sterne approached them about the idea.
Sterne addressed the possible concern of West and Jay Z being too recognizable to be believable as characters in George R. R. Martin's fictional world. "The roles they will be playing are very minimal. If you aren't looking for them, you'd miss them. Part of the fun of that is having people tune into the show to find what scene they appear in. Sort of like a 'Where is Waldo' thing."
Does this mean we can expect other pop culture icons to appear in the show? We'll have to wait and see. Tell us what you think of their cameo in the comments section below!
