Kendrick Lamar's love affair with indie rock has been well documented. Now the Compton rapper is lending his talents to psychedelic rock and teaming up with Jim Morrison, 43 years after the Doors frontman's death.
Lamar will be adding verses to unreleased vocal tracks from the late singer, which will be produced by Dr. Dre.
In a statement, Lamar said, "I was listening to the Doors a few months back and started rapping over some songs. Jim's hazy vocals blend well with the sound I tend to go for. Rather than sample already released material, I talked to Dre, and he thought it would be cool to see if we could get some unreleased Morrison stuff. After talking to his estate, we found a few tracks that we liked. I think we'll end up releasing one or two of them."
Surviving Doors members, drummer John Densmore and guitarist Robby Krieger, are also on board with the collaboration. "Kendrick lyricism reminds us a lot of Jim's poetry in a way. The mixing of genres and eras is a bit unexpected. I think in the past a few rappers have sampled the Doors, but these new tracks have never before been heard," Densmore said.
"We really like what we've heard so far," Krieger added. "We think these new tracks stay pretty true to what Jim's vision would have been were he alive."
No word yet as to whether these songs will be featured on an album or if they will come out as singles. It's possible that Morrison's estate is looking to do something similar to what Bob Dylan has done with his unreleased music.
