Sia has finally announced a release date for her new album, This Is Acting, on an Instagram account, @siathisisacting, specially created for that purpose. The account is essentially a puzzle intended to promote the album itself and it reveals that it's slated to drop in late January (Jan. 29).
According to Billboard, the new album will include her latest chart-topper, "Alive," that was originally written for Adele. Sia has also written for pop-stars such as Beyonce, Katy Perry and Rihanna. The entire promotional process surrounding her new album has been as secretive and reluctant as Sia herself. The pop-star is notoriously reclusive and shies out of the public eye as much as possible.
In late September (Sept. 25), the singer revealed the album art and release date for "Alive," which is, thus far, the only single fans have heard. An interesting twist to the first single is that "Alive" was originally meant to be featured on Adele's highly anticipated album, 25, and it was written from the perspective of the British pop-star. The way that Sia performed "Alive" on record left no doubt in anyone's mind that she has made it completely for herself.
But therein lies the entire purpose of This Is Acting which is an album that only features songs that were originally written for others. It is a far cry from 1000 Forms of Fear, which spawned hits "Chandelier" and "Big Girls Cry" amongst others. In an interview with NME, Sia explained the reasons behind the title and said, "I'm calling it This Is Acting because they are songs I was writing for other people, so I didn't go in thinking 'this is something I would say.' It's more like play-acting. It's fun.".
With a new album entitled This Is Acting, one wonders just who Sia really is, but it's likely that with the nature of her celebrity she will always keep fans guessing.
