Beirut Suicide Bombings Kill 43: 6 Suspects Arrested in Lebanon

Tragedy struck Lebanon's capital city of Beirut on Thursday (November 12), after twin suicide bombings left 43 people dead. Lebanon authorities have arrested six suspects, five Syrians and one Palestinian, in connection with the horrific murders, according to a recent Reuters report.

The explosions took place Thursday night at a Shi'ite community center and a bakery nearby in a busy shopping street and residential area of Borj al-Barajneh, a senior security source said on Saturday (November 14) according to Reuters.

A heavily guarded Hezbollah-run hospital was also in close vicinity of the bombings. Hezbollah, meaning "party of Allah", is a Shi'a Islamist militant group and political party.

The army reported two men wearing suicide vests initiated the attack in Beirut. According to BBC News, the first bomber detonated his bomb vest outside of a Shia mosque, while the second suicide bomber took his own life near a bakery.

A third assailant was found at the scene of the second blast after his vest failed to explode. He admitted to being an ISIS recruit. More than 200 people were injured, many of them in serious condition.

Lebanon's Hezbollah leader, Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, said Syrian and Lebanese detainees were arrested due to suspicion of involvement with the bombings. These were the first attacks to strike a Hezbollah-dominated area in Lebanon in over a year.

In a statement posted on an unverified online website, Islamic State (IS) said that its "soldiers of the Caliphate" blew up their bombs, which were concealed on motorbikes, when there was a large crowd gathering in the area. The attackers were later identified as two Palestinians and a Syrian, BBC News reported.

Hezbollah believes IS specifically targeted innocent civilians, calling the acts "satanic terrorist attacks." Hezbollah will continue their fight against "terrorists," warning the confrontation between its enemies may not be over just yet, according to the Associated Press.
