Electronic producer Corey Baker, AKA Kill Paris, has decided to change his DJ name in light of the tragic terrorist attacks on Paris, France late this past Friday evening. As Dancing Astronaut reports, Baker explains in a lengthy Facebook post that after the recent violent events he feels it would be inappropriate to continue to use a stage name that risks being associated with, in his words, "the negatives in life." He changed his Twitter handle to @SaveParis and will now perform under the new moniker Chill Harris.
Baker chose to create art under the pseudonym Kill Paris at the age of 16 after reading William Shakespeare's romantic tragedy Romeo and Juliet. As Your EDM points out, Count Paris is Juliet's rich suitor who Romeo kills in the play. Baker explains in the aforementioned Facebook statement that he meant the name Kill Paris "as satire against a side of life that tries to hold creativity and love down." In Greek mythology, Paris was also the character that abducted Helen and thus started the Trojan War, so the DJ moniker worked on many levels for an artist in the EDM world who wanted a name that "stood for sharing and focusing on the good and positive things in life."
One can only imagine the sort of backlash the name Kill Paris would inspire at this point in time. Fans obviously know the artist and the scene in which he creates music is all about peace and love, but as the artist notes, those who haven't gotten the chance to boogie down to the electronic producer might "get the wrong idea about [him] and [his] music just because [he's] gone under a particular pseudonym."
The artist's post concluded with a heartfelt remark that this news is small potatoes compared to the experiences of Parisians this weekend. He reminds fans that "we're all in this together" and directs fans who want to help Paris in more ways than sending good vibes to this site.
