We need to talk about Childish Gambino.
He's so sad now.
Also known by the name Donald Glover, the rapper's new era in his latest album Because The Internet has been marked by extreme self-awareness and even a twinge of depression. Today (April 14), Gambino dropped the most bizarre, self aware music video of his career with "Sweatpants."
The clip, shot all in one take, begins simply enough. A despondent-looking Gambino walks into a kind of crappy looking diner and sits unenthusiastically with three friends, gets a glass of water, gets up, plays with the jukebox and leaves out a side door before texting someone while another man throws up in a bush to his left and a couple makes out to his right.
Seems like another late night in New York.
Then, the video gets a little trippy. Gambino reenters the diner through the side door, but he's back where he began. He walks, sits and everything seems normal, except one friend is now another Gambino. He goes through the motions again, reenters the diner again, and everyone is a Donald Glover. There are dozens of them.
Waitresses, boys, girls, booth sitters, barfers... they are all Gambino. The end result feels like some sort of fever dream or nightmare that only the rapper himself seems to understand.
The end of the music video, which incorporates another Gambino track, features the rapper in a field, dancing wildly as others surround him.
It's very artsy sad... like, these are the inner thoughts of Glover and only he really understands them. But, I guess we can try.
