As previously reported, Justin Bieber made a surprise appearance during Chance the Rapper's set at Coachella over the weekend. Apparently, this trip led to him being unable to appear in court yesterday in Toronto, where he faces a recent assault charge.
The Toronto Star newspaper reports (via NME) that lawyers stood in for the pop star and provided additional disclosure in the case. Bieber's lawyer told the paper that the singer isn't expected at any of the court sessions until a trial date is set. The case is scheduled to return May 12.
The charges date back to an incident in December in which police allege that Bieber "hit a limousine driver several times in the back of the head after he and five others were picked up by a limo." Bieber ultimately turned himself into police in January to face the charge.
As NME notes, Bieber also missed his first court appearance in Toronto last month after he was officially charged with the assault on January 29.
Regardless of Bieber's absence, Beliebers showed up to his court appearance hoping to catch a glimpse of their idol. This week, however, no fans were present.
Bieber's actual trial date likely won't be set until the fall. Check out his Coachella appearance below, and let us know what you think in the comments section!
