Although Tom Petty had a previous run around with SiriusXM while hosting Tom Petty's Burried Treasure for nine seasons straight, the "Free Fallin'" singer is slated to man his own station on the satellite radio network, simply titled Tom Petty Radio. Set for arrival on Nov. 20, Petty will be the station's very first DJ on SiriusXM's Channel 31.
Petty plans to incorporate a collection of exclusive content, including fresh material, specially crafted by the Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers frontman. "We are so honored and grateful to SiriusXM for giving our fans access to all of our music, from our biggest hits to very obscure tracks only available through this channel," he explained in a statement. "I intend to be very hands on and supply brand new exclusive tracks as well as rarities from our vaults. Our biggest hope is for a channel that is always entertaining in the way only radio can be."
As part of the highly anticipated, one-of-a-kind content, a broadcast of a Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' Fenway Park gig on Aug. 30 will be made available alongside a first-hand interview with the 65-year-old musician and rock critic David Fricke. Tom Petty Radio listeners will be exposed to guest DJ spots from Heartbreakers bandmates as well as Petty's long list of renowned musicians and friends. Episodes of Buried Treasure will also be featured on the channel.
The singer-songwriter, who recently revealed he struggled with heroin addiction, will debut fresh tracks from forthcoming endeavours such an innovative album with Mudcrutch, a disc chock-full of unreleased tracks from the Wildflowers sessions, never-before-heard songs and cuts from records he's put out over his successful career.
"We are truly thrilled to be creating a new music channel with one of the biggest names in the history of rock 'n' roll," SiriusXM chief content officer and president Scott Greenstein said in a statement to UltimateClassicRock. "Now with his own channel, Tom can spread his wings playing his incredible music from multiple decades, the familiar and the rare, as well as a broad range of other artists in rock and R&B."
