Actor Taye Diggs is proud of his son's ethnicity and wants him to grow up to be just as proud of himself too. In a video interview, Diggs explains that his son's mother is a white woman, which makes his son bi-racial; and to anyone who may have a problem with that, he has choice words of advice: "go fly a kite."
The actor recently video chatted with TMZ where he opened up about his feelings toward his son's race, and those who have had much to say about it. "My son is mixed," The Best Man actor says in the video with TMZ. "His mother is white, his father's black, and that's just how it goes. I want him to be proud of who he is and I want him to be able to, on his own terms, include both parents."
The actor has felt compelled to dismiss the haters and backlash that came after he did an interview with The Grio, where he promoted his latest published book, Mixed Me, which is inspired by his 6-year-old son. In the interview, Diggs explained how the new book is a follow-up to his first published work, Chocolate Me, but how both stories promote the same message of self love and self worth, and being able to first accept who you are and love yourself despite what other people may think or say about you. He explained how Chocolate Me was about his own personal story growing up being a black child in a predominantly white neighborhood and how his son will have to learn how to deal with similar situations on his own, just as he did.
"[The book] is kind of along similar lines for my son, even though in this day and age he's going to have less of an issue being mixed than I did," he stated during the interview. "It's a book of self love and self appreciation and knowing that you are special regardless of what people will say about you because people will always say stuff."
And people certainly said "stuff" about his own personal views on how he chooses to raise his son, and cause him to be self aware. TMZ reported "Twitter came at Taye, hard -- saying he has "self hate issues and 'Somebody tell Taye Diggs Black man + white lady = black baby, that's just how it is, bro.'" Talk show host Wendy Williams even spoke on the internet backlash during her hot topics segment and also tweeted about it.
Nonetheless, Diggs is speaking out for himself and his family, especially his son. The actor specified to any and everyone who has a problem with what he's teaching his son that "they can go fly a kite."
