Macklemore & Ryan Lewis premiered the duo's new song "Kevin" at the AMAs tonight (Nov. 22) alongside featured artist Leon Bridges.
Striking a much more serious tone than their VMAs stunt, the group took a simple approach to the new song with a small arrangement of strings backing them dressed down in less-than-thrifty suits.
The song focused on a character that dons the song's title as his name. Like most great concept songs, Kevin is representing something bigger than just his own story of prescription drug addiction, extrapolating a message about the American dream.
"Doctor please give me a dose of the American dream / Put down the pen and look in my eye," Bridges sings on the chorus.
The song touches on many political issues in true Macklemore fashion ranging from a corrupt legal system to American exceptionalism. Hopefully, fans will get more details in the coming days about the release of the duo's new album, of which few details exist.
The group first teased the release of the new album back at the MTV VMAs back in September, when the duo performed a live recreation of the "Downtown" music video released just days earlier. Following that performance the song went to No. 12 the Billboard Hot 100.
Fans are waiting to see if the duo can repeat the success of 2013's The Heist, which had two No. 1 singles - "Thrift Shop" and "Can't Hold Us" - as well as two other top 20 hits - "White Walls" and "Same Love."
The 2015 AMAs featured performances from Selena Gomez, Carrie Underwood, Demi Lovato, Ariana Grande, One Direction, Nick Jonas, Walk The Moon, 5 Seconds of Summer, Gwen Stefani, Meghan Trainor with Charlie Puth, Pentatonix, Luke Bryan with Karen Fairchild, Coldplay and a closing performance from Justin Bieber.
