WATCH: One Direction change perspective in beachy 'You & I' music video from 'Midnight Memories'

One Direction play with the idea of perspective in the moody new music video for "You & I." The boy band dropped the clip for its third American Midnight Memories single today (April 18) on VEVO after initially announcing the track last week.

"You & I" starts simply enough, with a gray sweater, black pants and shoe wearing Niall Horan taking a stroll on a beachside boardwalk on a cloudy day, all while belting out the powerful love ballad.

Soon though, he takes a turn and morphs into Liam Payne, gray sweater and all. Then eventually, it's Harry Styles, Zayn Malik and Louis Tomlinson. The sweatered singer changes with the solo, creating a mesmerizing, emotional effect.

Why is it so emotional? Blame the acoustic power ballad, I suppose.

The solo stroll member switch motif remains throughout most of the "You & I" music video until the last minute or so, where all five 1D members appear on screen together (in a variety of gray and black outfits!). To play with the idea of stop motion and perspective here, frozen images of One Direction members and surrounding elements pop up on the boardwalk, and moments play out, eventually unfreezing a balloon or allowing Niall to complete a barrel roll.

"You & I" is the third official American single from One Direction's latest record; it follows "Best Song Ever" and "Story Of My Life." "Midnight Memories" was released as a single internationally and received a music video in January.
