During the 2015 AMAs last night, Gwen Stefani took the stage and performed her latest hit "Used to Love You" at the awards ceremony. The singer is known for her prowess in writing ultimate break-up ballads, and "Used to Love You" is no exception. Dressed in a peek-a-boo black gown with her signature red lipstick, Stefani performed solo for the majority of the song.
She was later joined by a group of back-up dancers, as reported by Billboard, and the AMAs show was the most touching performance she'd given of the track since she'd debuted it at a private event for select MasterCard holders. When watching the video of her performance, it is obvious that the singer really means it.
"Used to Love You" is widely believed to be about Stefani's ex Gavin Rossdale and in a recent interview with KIIS-FM radio the singer basically confirmed this to host JoJo Wright. Stefani and Rossdale filed for divorce this past summer after 13 years and three children together amongst rumors that her husband had cheated on her with the children's nanny.
"The song was not written that long ago," Stefani said on air, "Like, I want to say maybe a month and a half ago, which is crazy. I had been writing, writing because my life blew up. Everyone knows that my life blew up last February."
She continued with, "I was going along thinking that was going to be the rest of my life and it's not," in what can be assumed is a nod to her divorce.
According to the singer, there was a very intimate writing process behind the song and she further explained to the host, "There was one night, the epicenter of the whole thing - that's the most I can say about that - and the next day I wrote the chorus to, 'Used to Love You,' but I didn't know it was 'Used to Love You.' I had just written all this stuff and it happened to be in there buried in a bunch of lyrics."
While the divorce was clearly painful, Stefani recently moved on and began dating her The Voice co-host Blake Shelton, recently divorced from Miranda Lambert. They officially came out as a couple at the 2015 CMA Awards after months of denying the dating rumors.
