John Legend is teaming up with writer John Swetnam for a coming-of-age dance drama Breaking Through.
According to Deadline, the film will be independently financed and shot this summer.
The "All of Me" crooner and Step Up: All In writer have put together a film that will be the first of its kind combining two genres, dance movie and found footage.
Found-footage films are gaining popularity among filmmakers and Swetnam says the love of money has attributed to that.
"I think studios and financiers would be stupid not to want a part of the FF business," Swetnam said in an interview with Screen Rant. "It's about risk/reward and with FF right now, there's just a lot of upside. If I was using my own money, would I make one $10 million indie-dramedy or ten $1 million dollar FF horror films? I like money. I want more of it. So I go with option number two, and that's the way studios think... and to be honest, can you blame them?"
Breaking Through is described as a "documentary-style dance drama for the YouTube generation."
The site also reports that casting for the film will start soon and producers are looking for new dance talent.
Swetnam is writing and producing the film for his Mad Horse Films label. Breaking Through will be Swetnam's directoral debut.
He wrote Evidence and the upcoming feature Into The Storm.
Legend's production company, Get Lifted Films, will also back the project.
His partner Mike Jackson will produce the film alongside Uri Singer of BB Films, Luis Fragali of Perimeter Group, and Fabio Golombek of FJ Productions.
Legend will exec produce with Get Lifted's Ty Stiklorius and Alexandru Celea will oversee for Mad Horse.
