Congratulations are in order for Adele. Her new album 25 has officially broken NSYNC's record for the most single-week album sales in the United States... and she did so in only three days.
According to Billboard, Adele's 25 has already sold 2,433,000 copies since its release on Friday, Nov. 20. The catastrophic sales unsurprisingly set a new record for the fastest selling album in tracking history. The previous record was held by NSYNC's sophomore album No Strings Attached, which moved 2,416,000 copies in its first seven days on sale in March 2000.
With its massive first few days on sale, 25 is set to sell nearly 3 million copies in its first week on sale.
The big numbers for 25 should come as no real surprise. First off, Adele followed in the footsteps of Taylor Swift by not making her third studio album available for streaming on services such as Spotify or Apple Music, in order to help boost sales. Adele's new album has also been gathering nearly universal critical acclaim.
There was also a notable amount of hype surrounding the release of 25. This new record marks Adele's first release in nearly five years. During her break between albums, Adele was a quiet presence, rarely making public appearances. The release of her album's lead single "Hello" marked her first new single since her 2012 James Bond theme song "Skyfall."
With its massive sales number, obviously 25 is a sure thing for the No. 1 album in the U.S. next week. Topping the charts will be no new thing for Adele; "Hello" has been the No. 1 single on the Hot 100 for four weeks.
