Slim Jesus has never been shy about his insistence on staying independent. The Hamilton, Ohio artist has said he's received record contracts from a number of labels, only to brazenly turn them down. The "Drill Time" rapper is adamant that he remains untouched by the influence of major labels, preferring to retain complete creative control over his work and image. This week, Slim Jesus posted a video of himself burning an alleged record contract on Instagram.
In the video, Slim said, "A little fun fact a lot of y'all don't know. I been had offers from the same bullsh*t ass labels signing your favorite rappers. And you know how I feel about 'em? F*ck a label. We getting independent money, bitch."
Ever since the release of his "Drill Time" video, which has garnered over fifteen million views on YouTube, Slim Jesus has earned himself his fair share of praise and criticism. Despite a number of diss tracks, rapper Lil Bibby came to Slim's defense. The rapper asked Twitter why they were "dissing" Slim Jesus, and posted his "Drill Time" video. He also asked "What they on wit you Slim?"
However, Slim has earned his fair share of hate. Speaking about the rappers sudden rise, G Herbo told HipHopDX, "It is like mockery almost, but I don't knock him 'cause, sh*t, if it wasn't for him I probably wouldn't be who I am now. Like, those types of kids, those little white kids sitting in their f*ckin' house idolizing what we do and wanting to be a part of it cause we really live that sh*t. The sh*t that we've been through, I don't look at like it's a trophy like, "Oh yeah I'm from the hood and I done been through all the street sh*t. No, that just made me who I am and the situations I've been through in my life made me who I am now."
