Austin City Limits, the last of the American mega festivals to release its lineup for the 2014 season, has finally dropped its lineup for both weekends of the event, which will go down between October 3 and 5, plus between October 10 and 12.
The main act is a huge surprise in a year that's been full of headlining surprises: Outkast! Just kidding. The hip hop duo will be appearing at Austin City Limits, but during a year where the pair will appear at 40 music festivals, one more isn't quite a surprise. They will be joined by further rap royalty however, as Eminem adds Austin to his festival schedule (he'll also be playing Lollapalooza in August).
Pop and rock are also well-represented among the headliners. Pearl Jam and The Replacements will represent the rockers. It's worth wondering what the latter will have in store for the Texas crowds: The band brought out Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong on guitar for a few songs during Coachella's second weekend. The pop scene will be represented by two of the more engaging female stars of the moment, in Lorde and Lana Del Rey (although Lorde will only be present for weekend one). And of course, all festivals are aiming to bring in big-name EDM acts and Austin City Limits has done no differently...Skrillex and Calvin Harris will also be among the headliners.
This year's event will be particularly relevant for the city of Austin, one of America's key cities in the spotlighting of developing musicians. South By Southwest is the world's premier venue for any act looking to gain traction in the music industry, but this year's festival will forever be remembered for the tragedy that occurred when a drunk driver plowed his vehicle into a crowd, killing four and wounding more than 20 others. Austin City Limits will hopefully prove cathartic for the city.
