The thought of having your home broken into is a frightening experience to consider, but imagine a home invasion with your family still in the house! Simon Cowell recently experienced that horror after his mansion was robbed by an intruder while he and his family slept inside.
The former American Idol judge said he was asleep in his bed when a burglar entered his London mansion, according to TMZ. The burglary, which reportedly happened on Friday (Dec. 4), was the outcome of a failed security system that even included guard dogs. Cowell, who reportedly admitted to having "the worse guard dogs in the world," said his first instict was to think of the safety of his family, more specifially, his 21-month-old son, Eric.
"It was nerve- racking. Lauren [Silverman] was woken up with me and we checked on Eric" Cowell explained during his interview with The Sun. "That was the first thing we did, to make sure he was OK."
Cowell and his girlfriend were woken up by one of his bodyguards, telling them that an intruder had broken in. It wasn't the bodyguard who first spotted the burglar, though. It was "a security guard employed by residents to patrol the neighbourhood," according to the London publication. The man was seen fleeing and dropped a passport in the midst of trying to run away. The security guard obtained the passport that was left behind and saw that it belonged to Cowell.
In addition to the passport, the burglar reportedly got away with jewelry, cash and other items. 56-year-old Cowell says it's not about the material items, but rather the safety of his family. "It's not what they stole, it's the fact they got into the house," he stated according to The Sun. "That was the frightening thing, the idea someone was in my house."
At this point, it looks like Cowell and Silverman may be scouting a new set of bodyguards and guard dogs since this was the second time that someone was able to unlawfully enter their home. "This is the second time," he told The Sun. "A girl before, now a guy. That's what's scary. If a nutcase got in ... that's what I'm worried about."
