Why Prince is no longer using dirty words in his music

Prince, once known for his explicit and erotic lyrics, has stopped using curse words in his music. In the June issue of Essence (via People), the Purple One explained his choice to abandon the dirty words.

"Did you ever hear Muhammad Ali curse?" he said. "Would you curse in front of your kids? To your mother? Marsha [Ambrosius], Lianne [La Havas], Janelle [Monae] ... They're all my sisters. We shouldn't curse at them. We need to treat all of them, and all people, like royalty."

As People notes, the rock icon, who turns 56 next month, penned explicit tracks such as 1984's "Erotic City," which uses the "F" word several times.

Prince is set to headline the 20th anniversary of the Essence Festival in New Orleans on July 4. He also recently announced his first UK arena tour in nearly 20 years and is set to release a 30th anniversary reissue of Purple Rain as well as the highly anticipated Plectrum Electrum via Warner Bros.

The rock icon has also joined Essence and Van Jones for a national initiative, #YESWECODE, to help 100,000 low-opportunity youths to learn to code computers.

The full Prince cover story, including Price's Nile Rogers interview, is due out on newsstands May 9. You can read exerpts of the story here.
