When it comes to releasing efforts on vinyl, it's hard to be beat Jack White on creativity. Previously, he's released a record via 1,000 helium balloons, invented the triple decker vinyl record and created The World's Fastest Released Record. So it comes as no surprise that he has something special in store for the vinyl release of his sophomore album, Lazaretto.
He has a variety of goodies for the "Ultra" 12-inch 180-gram vinyl edition of the album. They are as follows:
1. It contains two hidden tracks that are only available on vinyl beneath the center labels.
2. Side A plays from the inside of the record outward with a locked groove that plays over and over again. White explains in a short documentary that this might be the first time that a locked groove was ever put on the outside of a record.
3. It has dual-groove technology. For the track "Just One Drink," the record plays either an electric or acoustic intro, depending on where the needle is dropped. The grooves eventually meet for the body of the song
4. This is the first time a record has had both a flat and flashy finish. Side B has a matte finish that gives the appearance of an un-played 78 RPM record
5. The vinyl version of Lazaretto contains different mixes of songs than the digital version and was mastered without any compression. The sequencing on the album is also different.
6. Side A is hand-etched with a hologram of a floating angel made by Tristan Duke of Infinity Light Science, the first of its kind on a vinyl record. Here's what it looks like:
