MGMT is Coming Back in 2016, Promises to "Re-dominate Your Mind Hole"

MGMT has taken to Twitter to tease the experimental indie rock outfit's return in 2016. On Christmas Day, the band promised fans that "2016 is the year MGMT re-dominates your mind hole, see you then!"

Founding band members Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser haven't made much noise in quite some time: MGMT's self-titled full-length studio album dropped back in 2013 and while the band released videos in support of singles "Alien Days" and "Cool Song No. 2," the duo hasn't released any new music since then. Furthermore, as Consequence of Sound reports, the band hasn't played a single show in the U.S. since Coachella in 2014.

Details regarding how MGMT plans to nudge its way back into our playlists after several years of relative silence remain unclear.

Is the band dropping a new album this coming year? If so, when will it be recorded? Have Goldwasser and VanWyngarden been spending the recent hiatus in the studio all along and are just really awesome at keeping secrets? Will it feature the same roster of musicians from their live touring band that they've pulled into the studio for past albums, or will they branch out and deliver on some dream collaborations?

Of course, the announcement could mean anything, but one look at Twitter makes it clear that most fans are now holding their collective breathe for a new album and all that would likely follow it.

Perusing fan and critic reactions to the announcement also shows an overwhelming expectation that the band does everything they can to bring listeners something more reminiscent of 2007's Oracular Spectacular. 2010's Congratulations and 2013's self-titled album remain arguably underrated, but were both a bit too experimental and all-over-the-place to garner the same kind of commercial reception as their earlier work and failed to keep MGMT in the limelight for very long.

Before disappearing from the spotlight these past few years, it had seemed like the band was destined to be relegated to those awkward, sweaty, poorly-lit early afternoon festival slots for the rest of their career. However, as NME points out, the band's festive tweet at the very least suggests that the duo is not content to chill in the sidelines anymore.

As Your EDM shares, 2016 is already shaping up to be a pretty epic year for music considering the roster of artists that have pledged their comebacks, including Justice, LCD Soundsystem, Gorillaz and now MGMT.
