Larry Wilmore named Stephen Colbert’s successor, will host 'The Minority Report' starting January 2015

With Stephen Colbert leaving his role as the host of The Colbert Report to take over The Late Show, Comedy Central has chosen a replacement for the 11:30 p.m. time slot. Larry Wilmore, a correspondent for The Daily Show, will become the new host beginning January 2015. The show will be called The Minority Report.

According to a press release: "Continuing in Comedy Central's tradition of producing groundbreaking late night formats, The Minority Report with Larry Wilmore will provide viewers with a distinct point of view and comedic take on the day's news from a perspective largely missing in the current late night landscape. Hosted by Larry Wilmore, the series will feature a diverse panel of voices currently underrepresented in comedy and television"

As Rolling Stone notes, Wilmore, 52, has been on The Daily Show since 2006 as their "Senior Black Correspondent." An Emmy-winning writer and producer, he's previously written for The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, In Living Color and The Jaime Foxx Show. He also co-created The Bernie Mac Show and The PJs and is set to executive produce a new ABC sitcom called Black-ish.

The Minority Report will be produced by Jon Stewart's Busboy Productions.

"I'm beyond excited to have this chance to continue my relationships with Comedy Central and the brilliant Jon Stewart," Wilmore said. "I love the city of New York and promise to only wear my Laker T-shirts when I'm layering."

Stewart commented on his replacement saying, "While Larry Wilmore is a brilliant comic and show runner, this is all just a complicated ruse to get him to move to New York and turn him into a Knicks fan."
