LCD Soundsystem Addresses Criticism Over Reunion in New Post

LCD Soundsystem have decided to reunite five years after their bout of farewell shows at Madison Square Garden. The decision comes right as Coachella announced its 2016 line-up, which LCD Soundsystem will be headlining. Further, the band has released a new song, and promised new music in the future. This is extremely exciting news for fans around the world, however, some feel slightly betrayed by lead singer-songwriter James Murphy's decision to get the band back together. Murphy disbanded LCD Soundsystem in 2011 believing that the band had accomplished all it could. This came after the fantastic 2010 LP This Is Happening. In a letter released online, Murphy addresses the criticism over his decision.

Murphy told fans that he was writing a ton of material in his time off, and decided to play it with his former bandmates. Murphy did not intend to participate in a "victory lap," or commercially exploit his past success, but rather to release the new music with his old bandmates so fans could hear it.

In the note, Murphy writes, "if you cared a lot about our band, and you put a lot of yourself into that moment (or anything about us you chose), and you feel betrayed now, then i completely understand that... i was so clearly expecting the cynical cries of foul, that i hadn't seen the heartfelt complaint coming."

He explains, "i write songs all the time. sometimes they're just weird songs i sing while changing a baby, or songs about annoying things that i sing to myself...early in 2015, i realized i had more of those than i'd ever had in my life. more of them than when i went in to make any lcd record, or when i recorded tapes upon tapes of terrible things in high school. just loads of them, and i found myself a little perplexed. if i record them, what do i do with them? maybe i shouldn't record them at all?
