It seems like Dan Auerbach spent his Christmas break doing what the rest of us did - watching the new Netflix docuseries Making a Murderer. Troubled by the story of Steven Avery and his nephew Brendan Dassey, The Arcs went to the studio and released a new song inspired by the show, "Lake Superior."
Auerbach and co. took the troubling story of Avery and Dassey, who were controversially jailed for life for the murder of photographer Theresa Halbach and translated it to their brand of psychedelic blues-based rock. With a relaxing melody on the surface, the lyrics of "Lake Superior" reflect being framed for a crime you didn't commit.
"On the stretch of sand sweet on the beat / And I took the Avery on the beach / Your alibi will never do / When the whole town's got it out for you," Auerbach croons in the opening bars of the song. And, just in case if you were wondering if Making a Murderer really inspired this song, the single's artwork features a photo of Avery and the band explained the song's meaning quite clearly.
"It's like Billy Childish says, 'We live in troubled times.' Last week, we got a sneak peek at what goes on behind the curtains of our criminal justice system. A few sleepless nights later we gathered in the studio and wrote this song. Written, recorded, mixed and mastered in 2 days," the band wrote on the track's Soundcloud page.
Proceeds from "Lake Superior" will go toward The Innocence Project, a charity that once cleared Avery from false rape claims and works to free wrongly convicted people.
