Bernie Sanders has done a remarkable job of galvanizing the youth (and others) to support him and spread his message. His rallies have attracted tens of thousands, and he has received over 2.5 million individual donations. However, many worry that he will not be able to beat Hillary Clinton in the Democratic primary process, and thus truncate his "political revolution." This could be due to Clinton's stronghold around the country with white, middle class voters, or her strong relationship with many delegates. However, some point to her strong lead among African American voters as an indication of her eventual victory. With Killer Mike, Big Boi, and others in his corner, Bernie Sanders hopes to reverse this trend.
According to the New York Times, Killer Mike (born as Michael Render), decided he had to support Bernie Sanders in the upcoming election due to a Tweet that the Vermont Senator posted. "It's official, I support @SenSanders" Mr. Render wrote on Twitter, using the senator's handle. "His call 4 the restoration of the voters rights act sealed the deal for me."
"Bernie Sanders has been the only politician in my lifetime that I have heard talk about reform that was directly out of King-ian organizing philosophy," Mike said.
Killer Mike joins Big Boi, Lil B, Bun B and other rappers in their support for the self proclaimed "democratic socialist candidate."
However, Hillary Clinton can include Snoop Dogg, Usher, and Waka Flocka Flame among her supporters. A New York Times/CBS poll conducted last month showed that 82 percent of Democratic primary voters planned to vote for Hillary, while only 8 percent chose to vote for Senator Sanders.
Sanders hopes that the vocal support he has received from Killer Mike and others will help bridge this gap, and make him competitive in an extremely important demographic for the Democratic Party. However, even if he does not win the election, his message and policy proposals will live on.
