According to Billboard, Yasiin Bey (Mos Def) was arrested last week in Cape Town for using fraudulent travel documents. The rapper was given 14 days to leave the country but that didn't stop him from releasing a freestyle via Kanye West, along with a message for his fans. The message posted on Kanye's site, was tweeted out by Kanye for people to hear.
The rapper's audio starts out with a freestyle, "No More Parties in S.A." and he rhymes, "I've committed no crime/Why is the state wasting my time?/They must be out of their minds." He also raps about his friendship with Kanye, "Thank you Kanye West for being a real friend."
The freestyle is a little under two minutes and right after, Yasiin goes into a long speech about his arrest and states that his documents were not fraudulent. He also goes on to talk about the South African government and their treatment towards him, "I am being prevented from leaving unjustly, unlawfully, and without any reason," he says. "I have reason to believe or suspect that there are political motivations behind the way I'm being treated."
According to NY Daily News, South Africa's Department of Home Affairs has asked Yasiin and his family to leave South Africa within 14 days of the arrest. But Yasiin states in his message that he is being detained. Home Affairs also mentioned that Yasiin entered South Africa in 2013 as an American but him and his family overstayed their visa. Yasiin and his family may receive a five year ban if deported from South Africa.
The most surprising part of the audio is when Yasiin reveals that he will be retiring from music. "I'm retiring from the music recording industry as it is currently assembled today, and also from Hollywood, effective immediately. I'm releasing my final album this year. And that's that."
