We'll warn you... you may need a tissue after listening to this one.
It's one thing to cover a song. It's another to take someone's song, completely make it your own thing and then expose your raw emotional being through the tune... especially when the lyrics were written by someone else. Oh, the difficulties of pop music. Well, John Mayer, who originally found himself in that pop genre, has somehow been able to do the latter, making Beyoncé's pop hit 'XO' the perfect John Mayer tune in every way possible.
Originally, 'XO' is a tune full of heart that matches the use of synths and sing-alongs to rather deep, vulnerable and intimate lyrics. Mayer's, on the other hand, is the exact opposite in terms of production value. The singer-songwriter has stripped the single down completely, leaving just him, an acoustic and a harmonica to be the only ones driving out the emotion in a folk-like fashion.
And as he usually tends to do, he's completely knocked it out of the park.
Mayer first introduced his Beyoncé cover during a recent show in Australia. Now he's recorded a studio version, which is available on Sirius and SoundCloud.
We're not exactly sure if Beyoncé and husband Jay Z have heard the tune. However, perhaps we can assume Jay is a fan considering he's booked Mayer on the Made in America Festival.
