The Decemberists Debut Two New Songs at Boston Calling, Fueling Rumors of a New Album for 2014

It's been a minute since The Decemberists performed live, but over the weekend, the literary rockers came together once again for a gig at the Boston Calling Festival. Among a set of old standards, Colin Meloy and co. gave two new songs a debut, gearing up rumors that new album is on its way.

The Decemberists played two new songs in Boston, which Stereogum reported are called "Lake Song" and "Philomena."

The five-plus minute ballad "Lake Song" features a twangy and plucked lead guitar above rich backing chords courtesy of an acoustic guitar and the piano, recalling a simpler time in The Decemberists discography, before the rick folky sounds of The King Is Dead and The Crane Wife.

The second new The Decemberists song "Philomena" similarly takes a back-to-basics approach, with a singsong melody and plenty of pop influence in the band's established brand of indie rock. With starts and stops leading up to the peppy, full chorus, the swinging patterns of "Philomena" marks this song as one of the simply cutest songs in The Decemberists discography.

"Lake Song" and "Philomena" are two new songs from The Decemberists, and the tracks' debut has fueled speculation that a new album from the rockers may be in the works for late 2014/early 2015. After taking a several yearlong break for solo pursuits, The Decemberists are expected to release a new album soon.

The band's last album, The King Is Dead, was released in 2011.
