Run-DMC is slated to open for the Red Hot Chili Peppers at a pre-Super Bowl concert, which will take place in San Francisco. The group is going to perform at the 6th annual DIRECTV Super Saturday Night concert party, hosted by Pier 70. The performance is uber exclusive, by invitation only, and will be co-hosted by Mark Cuban of AXS TV.
“We get to be in the energy of the Super Bowl, which is amazing,” Rev. Run told Billboard this past Wednesday. “This should be high energy, fun and cool.”
The 50th Super Bowl itself will occur at Levi’s Stadium in California on that Sunday night. Joseph Simmons, also known as Rev. Run, will be attending the high-energy game between the Carolina Panthers and the Denver Broncos.
The DIRECTV concert has previously been played by Justin Timberlake, Jay Z, Katy Perry, Rihanna, Kanye West and Beyonce. DIRECTV has also collaborated with the Pepsi company in the past for other concerts at Pier 70, which will feature Pharrell and Dave Matthews Band beginning on Thursday.
“We are from that era of eternally great, amazing, fun and enjoyable music with a presentation theme,” Darryl “DMC” McDaniels further said to Billboard. He will be traveling back from New York following the concert to watch the game from the comfort of home. “That’s what people are going to get. We’ve still got some longevity with this rock n’ roll, hip-hop thing.”
Run DMC is also scheduled to receive a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and their nod was announced early last month (Jan. 13) by the Recording Academy. Run-DMC is going to be added to a list of notable recipients including Ruth Brown, Celia Cruz, Earth, Wind & Fire, Herbie Hancock, Jefferson Airplane and Linda Ronstadt. Run DMC will be honored in an intimate ceremony with other nominees this year.
