DJ Dave Herman Dies While In Federal Custody Awaiting Trial

New York DJ Dave Herman died Wednesday (May 28) while in federal custody awaiting federal trial on charges of trying to seduce a 6-year-old girl.

New York Daily News reports that the 78-year-old retired disc jockey apparently suffered a fatal aneurysm inside the Essex County Jail in Newark.

His reported cause of death comes from his lawyer, Marc Agnifilo.

Herman was in federal custody following his arrest last year in the Virgin Islands. His arrest was a result of an undercover sting operation conducted by Bergen County prosecutors.

The site also reports that the ex-WNEW-FM morning man was charged with attempting to transport a minor to engage in sexual activity, which is a federal charge.

According to court documents filed last week, Herman was involved in a plea negotiation.

He was in custody since his Oct. 24 arrest at the St. Croix airport, where authorities say he planned to meet the young school girl and her mother.

Prosecutors claim that Herman cut an internet deal with a 36-year-old woman to have sex with her daughter Lexi at his island vacation home.

"I find girls that age incredibly sexy, soft, and their innocence is also a huge turn-on for me," Herman allegedly told the girl's mother. "Age 6 is the perfect time to start her being loved that way."

Authorities also say Herman encouraged the use of alcohol.

Unknowingly, Herman communicated with an undercover investigator for months.

His attorney claimed that Herman was hoping to sleep with the girl's mother, not the child.
