Hotly-tipped multi-instrumentalist Jack Garratt has unveiled another song from his debut artist album, Phase, titled "Surprise Yourself." Premiered with Annie Mac on BBC Radio One yesterday evening, the track is the latest to emerge from the "Weathered" artist's debut album that will be released this Friday, Feb. 19.
The track starts out with Garratt's soft vocals over warbling bass and slowly builds up with some drums and then explodes with some extra oscillating synths and soft cooing over the sped up drums.
In conversation with Annie Mac after the world premiere, Garratt revealed that this was one of the oldest songs on the album and is nearly four years old at this point. Compared to his latest single "Fire," which also happens to be his newest, it all feels strange to put them together side-by-side as songs on the same project since they were made so far apart.
"It's just so strange because [the album has] gone through so many alterations and I've had this song, and this song has stayed the same the entire time," says Garratt of the single. "The original demo I did in comparison to what it is now, it's come with me on the last three, almost four years of my career so far."
After their short chat, Mac spins the single once more because you should hear it again.
Even before releasing his debut album, he has already won a Brit's Critics Choice Award and was named the BBC Sound of 2016, fitting for someone who has so much buzz surrounding his career, especially in the UK.
Garratt's debut artist album Phase will be released in two days, Feb. 19, via Island/Interscope Records. Pre-order the album on iTunes.
