It's not often that a band still around rocking 20 years after the release of its breakthrough album, so rightfully, Soundgarden have been celebrating the Superunknown landmark for months. Last night (June 3), Chris Cornell and co. took to The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon to perform two songs and discuss the writing process of the 1990s.
For the aired portion of The Tonight Show, Soundgarden ripped through "Spoonman," which Fallon dubbed a "classic" (and he would be correct).
Dressed in all black, the band tore through the Superunknown lead single, making it feel as though very little time had passed since the signature grunge rock album dropped.

Then, in a web-only encore, Soundgarden performed "My Wave" and discussed how they wrote the track. "'My Wave' was either next to last or the last song we wrote for Superunknown in its entirety; we were just rehearsing," Cornell explained in the interview.
As for the performance, it was somehow more rocking than "Spoonman," with roaring guitars and sludgy basslines perfectly complimenting Cornell's throaty vocals.
March 8 marked the 20th anniversary of Soundgarden's breakout album Superunknown, an occasion the band has celebrated on the live circuit.
Starting July 20, Soundgarden will be taking Superunknown on tour alongside Nine Inch Nails, which is celebrating the 20th anniversary of The Downward Spiral.
