Pharrell Williams Apologizes for Wearing Native American Headdress, Fans Not ‘Happy’

Singer-songwriter, rapper and producer Pharrell Williams turned some heads when he appeared on this month's cover of Elle magazine donning a Native American headdress. While some found the cover eye-catching, it seems others were not too "Happy" about it, thinking it was just plain offensive. Because of this, the singer has just issued an apology.

While it was certainly strange to see Williams without his trademark brown cap, the headdress led to negative comments that claim the magazine's decision was distasteful, stating it's wrong to wear a headdress if you are not, in fact, a Native American chief.

Now, while Williams has claimed Native American and Egyptian heritages in the past, we don't believe he's a chief. However, perhaps we'll have to check again.

He recently issued a statement via his publicist, saying, "I respect and honor every kind of race, background and culture. I am genuinely sorry."

As far as who is to blame for the decision to wear the headdress, it seems Elle is taking responsibility. A press release from Elle UK states, "[W]e persuaded ELLE Style Award winner Pharrell to trade his Vivienne Westwood hat for a native American feather headdress in his best ever shoot." So, are they sorry? Not quite sure, but they did take accountability.

The cover also caused quite an uproar on social media, with Elle UK's Facebook page being inundated with comments. The hashtag #nothappy was also making the rounds on Twitter.

Perhaps it seems best just to stick with the cap that has made him famous.
