Spoon may be teasing a song (or something) called "R.I.P." for June 10, but the indie rock band is very much alive. After four years lying low, today (June 5), Spoon announced a new album They Want My Soul.
After a four-year hiatus, Spoon announced it will be releasing the new album on Aug. 5 in an interview with NPR Music.
Featuring songs with titles such as "Knock Knock Knock," "Inside Out" and "They Want My Soul" as well as a cover of Ann-Margret's "I Just Don't Understand," Spoon's eighth studio album marks the band's longest time before efforts, wherein each member pursued solo pursuits, from Britt Daniel's Divine Fits to bassist Rob Pope's bar.
"Between 2001 and 2010, we put out five records, which is not a lot by '60s standards. But in terms of today's standards, it's pretty fast. I mean, especially since concert promoters run the business now. And that's the way you make money, is doing shows, you know," Daniel said. "So we just needed a break. And when we got back together, I felt that that break was a good thing. And we were all excited about playing again."
The new album, which will be led by something entitled "R.I.P." early next week, will be Spoon's first since 2010's Transference, which peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard charts and launched the single "Written In Reverse."
Spoon is currently on tour, promoting its forthcoming album. The band will return to the United States this weekend (June 7) with a performance at the Governors Ball Music Festival in New York City.
