Major Lazer: Peace Is The Mission extended album
The video was shot in Fuse ODG's native country of Ghana and features villagers from Nzulezo as they dance and generally celebrate life to the rhythm of the dancehall-influenced track "Light It Up." Directed by Sam Pilling, the entire video is shot in black and white as it takes you into a very rural village and its surrounding countryside.
"The whole sentiment of this Major Lazer track is about overcoming negativity and sadness, coming together, and rising up in dance to 'Light It Up,'" says Pilling in a statement.
"Because Fuse's family is from Ghana we thought it would bring a really interesting aesthetic to film the video there. Delving deeper into Ghanaian culture, we found that their traditional funeral ceremonies perfectly exemplify this sense of coming together to rise up against sadness.
The whole community joins together, first in mourning the death, then in celebrating the life that was lived. We worked closely with a Ghanaian family and village, meeting the elders and receiving their blessing to film a real funeral ceremony," explains the director.
It ends with a short extract of a poem "Kae" that Pilling feels worked with the rest of the video.
"I found a poem 'Kae' [Remember] written in a traditional Ghanaian language-Twe-which felt like the perfect companion to the video as it is about reflecting on sadness but rising up and looking to the future and to new life."
This is the latest video to emerge from Major Lazer. They unveiled the "Be Together" video in January. The trio is gearing up to be one of the first major American acts to play in Cuba on March 6 since relations were normalized between the two countries.
