The Essence Festival 2016 is heading back to New Orleans this Summer and has announced who festival goers can expect to hit the stage for great performances this year. Among the list of old school and new school Hip Hop and R&B legends are Digable Planets, Maxwell, Jidenna and more.
Essence released their full lineup of performers for this year's festival and the list is full of great performers of both now and then. To many old school hip hop lovers from the 90s, the names Doodle Bug, Lady Bug Mecca and Butterfly represent a time in hip hop where songs like "Rebirth of Slick" sat at the top of any hip hop lover's playlists and stayed in heavy rotation on most urban/hip hop radio stations. The group Digable Planets was simply just "cool like dat" and Essence will reunite the trio on one stage for their annual event.
In addition to Digable Planets, artists like Kendrick Lamar, Jidenna, Dej Loaf and BJ the Chicago Kid will add to this year's Hip Hop performance line up and are sure to amaze and wow the crowd.
But, they did not forget about the soul and R&B lovers. According to publication's web page, Mariah Carey and Maxwell are both set to take the main stage at the superdome, while other R&B artists like Andra Day, Faith Evans, New Edition, Tyrese and Ciara are also scheduled to perform during the 4th of July weekend celebration at other venues.
According to the Boombox, the festival will begin on June 30 and continue straight through to Sunday July 3 with empowerment seminars going on during the day from prominent motivational speakers, published authors and life coaches. While at night, the magic happens on stage at various locations for live musical performances.
The Essence Festival has reached such a overwhelming success that it is now expanding to not just one date and location but, it's adding a second festival and taking it out of the country. According to an Essence press release, a a three-year partnership with eThekwini Municipality has allowed the festival to also take place in Durban, South Africa in 2016 and 2017. The planning and talent are still in the works for this event but, sure to be just as spectacular as the annual New Orleans event.
