"Money on My Mind" may be one of the songs that helped Sam Smith break out in a major way on his debut album In the Lonely Hour, but that doesn't mean he's particularly fond of the track. In a new interview as he preps for his second studio album, the "Writing's on the Wall" singer revealed he actually hates the track.
Speaking to the Associated Press, Smith remarked that he was proud of the timeless nature of In the Lonely Hour, except for one song (which was actually a major single).
"There's a few songs I really f*cking hate, but then the core of the album, songs like 'Stay With Me,' 'I'm Not the Only One' - actually all the songs except 'Money on My Mind' - I really love and I'm really proud of the classic-ness of the way they sound, because I still listen to them now and I still love them," he said.
As he preps for his sophomore album, how will that compare to his big debut? Apparently it's going to be "deeper," which is a lot to say for an earnest songwriter like Smith.
"Every day I'm having little epiphanies and changes and loving it. But all I can say is that I'm putting my heart even more out on the line," he revealed. "I'm going even deeper. I can't believe I'm even doing it, but I'm going even deeper."
As Smith writes and records his yet-to-be titled follow-up album, he's also taking a little break from social media. After taking home the Oscar for his James Bond theme song "Writing's on the Wall," Smith was criticized for mistakenly calling himself the first openly gay Academy Award winner. In wake of the backlash, he cited a famous Bond line while logging off Twitter for the time being.
