Who doesn't love surprises? Late Thursday (March 3) night, Kendrick Lamar gifted fans with a new album called Untitled Unmastered. The project is filled with unreleased tracks. This is Lamar's fourth studio album, a follow up to his Grammy-winning and chart-topping piece of work, To Pimp a Butterfly. The rapper even called on Swizz Beatz's son to produce a song.
The album features eight songs with ambiguous titles consisting of nothing but the word "untitled" alongside a series of dates. The tracks appear to have been created in 2013 and 2014, which is around the same time the 28-year-old Compton native began working on To Pimp a Butterfly.
Songs included on the album apparently derive from a few of Lamar's various late night performances, like his thought-provoking show at the 58th annual Grammys last month, on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in January, and on Comedy Central's Colbert Report in 2014.
“You see all these performances on these late night shows,” Lamar told 2DopeBoyz in February. “I got a chamber of material from the album that I was in love where sample clearances or something as simple as a deadline kept it off the album. But I think probably close to ten songs that I’m in love with that I’ll still play and still perform that didn’t make the cut.”
Although the "Alright" rapper did not provide details regarding features or producers he worked with to complete the tracks, a certain super producer dropped provided the answer. Swizz Beatz took to his social media pages to embrace his proud father moment, letting fans know his five-year-old son Egypt Daoud Dean produced the beat on track seven.
Beatz posted two videos of Egypt creating the beat on the piano. According to the individual captions, the young musician did not receive any help creating the beat. Egypt's mom, who just so happens to be Alicia Keys, revealed he was humming a tune in the morning and quickly went to the piano to sharpen the tune stuck in his head.
Untitled Unmastered is available to buy on iTunes, stream on TIDAL, or listen to it now on Spotify below:
