Break Out Those Walkmen! Cassette Store Day 2014 Set For September 27

Record Store Day is a marked music industry success, with vinyl record sales soaring every April, there has to be a market out there for other dated forms of music listening technology, right? Well, some people think there is, which is why for the second year in a row, there will be an official Cassette Store Day.

According to Billboard.biz, this Sept. 27 music stores throughout Europe and the United States will be moving cassettes again like it's 1989. The event follows in the likeness of Record Store Day (which took place on April 19) but the two promotions are actually unrelated.

In its second year, Cassette Store Day will be led by California's Burger Records in the United States, while Kissability and Suplex will be taking over things in Europe. "We've built our foundation on the forgotten [tape] format and have been preaching the merits of warm analog cassette culture for years. We're honored to be ambassadors of Cassette Store Day 2014 in the good ol' USA! We plan to bring some of our favorite labels to the table and invite everyone to the party and partake in the fun phenomena of releasing top shelf music on cassette tapes in pop culture today," Burger Records said in a Tumblr post.

Though Record Store Day continually moved 100,000+ vinyls in one day, Cassette Store Day has yet to experience that level of widespread success. According to Billboard.biz, last year's CSD contributed to just 1000 tapes sold throughout the tracking week, which was only a one percent increase from the previous week.

But that's not stopping the event's organizers, who are hoping to bring cassettes back into the mainstream music collector's conscious in the way that vinyls have been resurrected.

"The cassette is still a very current format in DIY and underground scenes due to its affordability and ease. I also think physical formats will stick around in music as when you are a fan you want more than a digital file. You want something you can interact with that holds a greater worth and reward," said Casette Store Day founder Steve Rose.

So get out those Walkmen and prep for some old school listening! Cassette Store Day 2014 will take place on Sept. 27.
