New York City-based funk, disco and house duo The Knocks just released their debut album 55 on Big Beat Records. To kick off the album, they teamed up Cam'ron to release an homage to their home town of New York City, aptly named after the big apple. Now they have unveiled a new music video for the track, which takes place in the most New York place of all, the subway (no not Times Square - New Yorkers avoid that place like the plague).
The video was shot on an iPhone 6, much like they want you to do in their commercials and it looks pretty clean, but not amazing. The video takes place the M train out to Forest Hills and the L train out to Brooklyn with the break-dancers who provide in-train entertainment. Flipping and contorting around poles in subway cars and flipping their hats on and off of their heads while doing so, these are an integral fabric of the New York entertainment experience that comes free, though tipping is encouraged. The MTA would like to say that they aren't allowed to do it, but nobody listens.
In a release, The Knocks said that they think the video "captures an authentic depiction of life in our city."
"New York City" as Cam'ron calls it in the opening verse "the medina, the mecca, the melting pot" is the first track on The Knocks debut album 55 released last Friday. It was a single released in January and probably the most unique song on the LP, compared to the other disco, house and pop-inflected tracks found on 55.
Watch the video as premiered on Apple Music.
