On-the-rise hip-hop artist The West Ghost, unsurprisingly from the West Coast, recently released his latest 5-track EP, Son of Sorrow, mixing dark trap, soul and catchy rap into a genre-bending collection of songs. With hopes of creating more of a platform for lyricists like himself, while also incorporating the mainstream appeal of current hip-hop trends without catering to any audience, The West Ghost's newest material is sure to leave an impression. "I represent no history, no race, and no background because such things are only flimsy excuses to let pride cloud justice and understanding," the artist explains in his official bio. While his lyrics spell out to listeners the kind of artist he is, The West Ghost is mainly anonymous, especially in his promotional images and material. He represents himself as a symbol, which is "the combination of three simpler [logos], each symbolizing major parts of the personality, the first and dominant being sorrow," his SoundCloud profile states.
His songs clearly embody sorrow in certain ways, but what I hear throughout each track is pride. While he's rapping about other emotions, West Ghost is strong in his convictions and reflecting them is his music. Depression is evident, but WG is empowered by sharing his powerful lyrics.
